I’ve never really gotten into using Ubuntu before, though this week I’ve given it a go several times and given in. This evening however I managed to once again mess up my Windows isntallation forcing me to re-install something to get online – I chose Linux. Since I realised it’d take a while for me to install Windows again I just thought “Hey, let’s give it a shot, it’s not like you can do anything else?” So I did. I didn’t understand anything for a long time, but it’s all started to kick in now; I’ve managed to theme my desktop, install all my hardware, listen to my music and connect to the internet – everything seems to work so far (except any decent game). One thing that I think most new users will find a treat is the amazing visual effects; when you drag windows they shake about in a liquid-esque manner, and it’s entertaining to sit and watch (if you’re amazed by such small things as I am). Once again though I must underline the statement that if you’re looking to play games it’s a long shot to getting it to work, you can use Wine (a Windows Emulator) but for me that hasn’t really worked. Also Photoshop isn’t compatible with Linux, which is a major flaw in the works for me.
I’ll see how things go, and I wonder if I can live with Linux until the delivery of my incredibly sought-after treat, my new Dell XPS 1530.
